Rice Farmers’ Levels of Information Source on Mitigation Actions Against Climate Change Effects in North-East Zone, Nigeria

This study assessed rice farmers’ levels of information source on mitigation actions against climate change effects in North-east zone Nigeria. Multi-stage random sampling techniques was employed to select 300 rice farmers. Data for this study were collected through primary and secondary sources. The analytical tools used in this study were descriptive (frequency count, percentages and weighted mean). The results of the socioeconomic shows that most 33% of the respondents fell within the age brackets of 47-54 with a mean age of 47.83 years. Majority 98.7% of the respondents were males, while 85.6% were married. More than half 54.7% fell within the ranges 7-11 household size. Their farming experience fell within 18-24 years with a mean farming experience of 17.15 years More than half 53.7% had no formal education. Majority (95.3) of the rice have not used mitigation actions against climate change effects. Also, level of information sources on mitigation actions and climate change effects were low and fell within the mean range of 1.0-1.70 level. Furthermore, socioeconomic characteristics significantly influence the use of mitigation actions among rice farmers. Based on the findings of this study it is concluded that majority of the rice farmers lack adequate level of information on mitigation actions and climate change effects from the sources saddle with the responsibility for providing information. Therefore, it is recommended that sources charge with the responsibility for providing information on mitigation actions and climate change effects should adequately live up to their obligations to provide farmers with useful information regarding climate related issues.
