Estrogen replacement therapy in 41 patients following hysterectomy with oophorectomy for endometriosis

Objective To evaluate the effects of conjugated equine estrogens (CEE) in estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) following total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (TAH with BSO) for the treatment of endometriosis. Methods 41 endometriosis patients with severe climacteric syndrome following TAH with BSO were assigned to three treatment groups to receive CEE of different doses: Group A 0.3 mg/d, Group B 0.625 mg/d, Group C 1.25 mg/d. Climacteric syndrome, recurrence of symptoms and side effects were summed up after 9 months. Results Significant improvements in climacteric syndrome, Kupperman indices and E_2 level were achieved in all of the three groups (P0.05), with no significant differences between the three groups. Conclusion CEE is a safe and effective ERT for endometriosis following TAH with BSO.
