Flat steel plate and T-shaped fillet weld specimens were fabricated from approximately 60- and 100-year-old aged steels obtained from demolished bridge members. First, to investigate grain refinement of the aged steels in the depth direction, metallographic observations and residual stress measurements were performed on the peened flat steel plate specimens. The results revealed that grain size change continued up to the depth where compressive residual stress was introduced, and the degree of the change significantly depended on the original grain size of each aged steel. Then, to investigate grain refinement near the treated surface, Vickers hardness and microstructure characterization were perfromed on the T-shaped fillet weld specimens before and after peening treatment. These results revealed that peening treatment refined grains near the treated surface in a manner similar to that in conventional steel, whereas these refined grains in aged steels tended to become loosened with increasing depth from the treated surface. Finally, to investigate the effect of fatigue strength improvement of the aged steels, three-point bending fatigue tests were performed under a stress ratio of around R = 0.1. The results confirmed that the aged steels exhibited a comparative degree of fatigue strength improvement same level to that of conventional steel. However, it was also found from the fracture surface observation that applying the peening treatment intensity determined for the conventional steel may be excessive for aged steels.
