Drawing on data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), I find that men’s retirement reduces the mortality risk of their parents, whereas no comparable effects are observed for women. Evidence on mechanisms suggests that these survival gains are accompanied by increased visiting frequency, consistent with greater provision of informal caregiving. The absence of similar effects for women appears to reflect lower geographic proximity to parents. These findings indicate that retirement policies generate significant intergenerational externalities and that evaluations omitting these spillovers may understate the social effects of retirement, particularly in settings with limited formal care.
