Review of: "Alleviating Bothersome Symptoms of Umbilical Endometriosis by En Bloc Resection in a Young, Fertile Patient"

peer-review OA: gold CC0

Abstract

The article describes a case of recurrent umbilical endometriosis that was excised surgically.Following the rst excision, the specimen was not subjected to biopsy. This is not in line with standard good practice. At the authors' institution, the lesion was excised including the peritoneum and was sent for histology, which con rmed the diagnosis. The umbilicus was reconstructed. The description is clear but offers nothing new. This type of lesion is rare but well recognised. The article provides some confusing statistics about lesion frequency. It also contains a statement that endometriosis was ruled out by clinical examination and by ultrasound. This is not adequate to rule out pelvic endometriosis.Overall, the main weakness is that the article simply describes a standard management of a lesion that is well recognised and, although rare, is likely to be encountered by most gynaecologists.
