New 19-norprogestins like dienogest and nomegestrol acetate aim to combine favorable metabolic profiles with effective endometrial effects, and their differing impacts should not be dismissed as therapeutically insignificant.

Abstract

Summary: New 19-norprogestins such as the estrane derivative dienogest or the 19-norprogesterone derivatives nomegestrol acetate, trimegestone and promegestone have been developed with the aim of combining the potentially advantageous metabolic characteristics of 17α-hydroxyprogesterone derivatives with the very effective endometrium effect of conventional 19-nortestosterone derivatives. Even if the clinical relevance of the differing effects of the various gestagens on individual surrogate parameters may be disputed, one must not draw the conclusion that these differences have no therapeutic significance whatsoever. This would not do justice to the claims
