Abstract
Endometriosis is a challenging medical condition with debilitating effects on the quality of life of women, as well as their mental and emotional health. More so, it remains a diagnostic dilemma as the symptoms are atypical or sometimes even asymptomatic. The treatment objectives include the relief of pain and prevention of recurrence. These agents should suppress the synthesis of estrogen and reduce the bleeding, as well as induce atrophy of the endometriotic implants, thus creating a “pseudo-pregnancy” or “pseudo-menopause” status. Although all agents are clinically effective, they differ in their mechanism of action, route of administration, length of therapy, and their side effects. Thus, it is essential to develop effective and well-tolerated therapies that are optimal for long-term use. The drug should be affordable for its users, safe, and with an acceptable side-effect profile.
