Abstract

Prediction of floods in ephemeral streams is very challenging due to highly variable rainfall patterns and a lack of historical time series data. This study is an attempt to mitigate such challenges by employing Geomorphological Instantaneous Unit Hydrograph (GIUH) model to the ephemeral Banas River in India. Three variants of the GIUH model are developed based upon Nash model, the probability distribution function of travel time, and the Kumaraswamy distribution-based. These models are used to simulate the daily hydrographs at the monitoring sites. The predicted discharge values are compared with the observed discharge values for the selected rainfall events. The models are evaluated using 𝑅 2 error, Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE), and Kling-Gupta efficiency (KGE) metrics. The Kumaraswamy distribution-based GIUH model is further analyzed using hourly discharge hydrographs andit was observed that the proposed model shows good efficacy as compared to the other models in regenerating the hydrographs for the ephemeral streams.
