Association of Area Deprivation with Chronic Kidney Disease in Pediatric Sickle Cell Anemia

Abstract
Social determinants of health have been associated with increased morbidity and mortality, including for chronic kidney disease (CKD). We performed a retrospective cohort study in 318 pediatric patients living with sickle cell anemia (SCA) to assess the association of persistent albuminuria with neighborhood-level deprivation and food access. Additionally, we mirrored this study to determine the effect of food insecurity on CKD in the SCA murine model. Fifty six cohort participants (17.6%) had persistent albuminuria. Participants living in deprived neighborhoods had 1.89 greater odds of having persistent albuminuria (p=0.035). We did not identify a significant difference for patients living in food deserts (p=0.44) or murine SCA model. Interventions that address social disparities in our sickle cell population may improve clinical outcomes.
