This paper provides some insights on the new technologies emerging in the current information society and on how libraries are responding to satisfy patron needs through diversely innovative library services. The study adopted a systematic literature review method to search, select and evaluate pertinent papers from a range of databases and journals. This literature review offers supporting evidence to illustrate how academic libraries are adopting and integrating emerging technologies to enhance and support active teaching and research. The paper analysed current trends and emerging technologies in academic libraries, strategies employed by libraries, benefits and challenges; it also looked at the ethical considerations in implementing new technologies, the future of libraries with regards to technology and further highlighted some recommendations from the literature. The review is unique since it assessed various aspects of technologies used in academic libraries. Since the number of papers on this topic is steadily increasing, this work can also serve as a point of reference for further studies. Library Science Information Retrieval and Management Academic Libraries Emerging Technologies Digital Libraries Library Technology Artificial Intelligence in library Introduction Academic libraries are increasingly integrating emerging technologies to enhance their services and align with the evolving needs of the academic community in the 21st century (Ocloo & King, 2022 ). This transformation involves adopting innovative tools and platforms to improve information access, research support, and user experience (Anafo et al., 2020 ). Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) serve as a catalyst for the creation of strategies that target the day-to-day operations of academic libraries (Fagbola et al., 2021 ). The potential of ICTs to revolutionise the teaching and research practices of daily academic life is considerable; they do so by introducing a host of complexities and challenges. As these technologies advance, collaboration, the dissemination and distribution of library resources are significantly improved (Adeoye et al., 2021). Recent developments in technology have caused academic libraries to adapt in ways that affect library procedures, operations, and accountability for academic results. The academic library system has changed to a new model that is focused on satisfying the requirements, demands, and expectations of service groups, such as academic staff, students, and administrative staff, notwithstanding obstacles (Tait et al., 2016 ). To maintain their competitiveness in the academic library market, librarians must make use of available training. Gupta et al. (2024) assert that to change this approach and provide the greatest possible preparedness for upcoming academic problems, ongoing employee training is crucial. Expanding the Definition and Scope of Emerging Technologies Rapid changes in information and communication technologies are forcing libraries to completely reconsider their traditional services and capabilities. New and emerging technologies differ depending on the structure and environment of the organisation, as well as its governance and service models (Ocloo & King, 2022 ). In 2011, "a mobile-technology strategy" was considered an emerging technology in some academic libraries, but in 2018, it was assumed that almost everyone entering a library carries a mobile device, enabling them to access information at their convenience, in any format, and on any topic (Dei 2020 ). In 2011, the concept of emerging technologies was more limited in scope than it is now. There has been a constant introduction of new digital services that are changing the way staff, space, and funding are allocated, leading to unforeseeable shifts in priorities (Martzoukou, 2021 ). Academic libraries, in particular, are facing the challenge of adapting to the diverse needs of faculty, student services, and university-wide initiatives aimed at promoting innovation, entrepreneurship, and distance learning. As mentioned by Okunlaya et al. ( 2022 ), these changes require careful planning to align technology with teaching methods in order to fully utilise their potential. Faculty, students, and outreach audiences often lack the information and digital literacy needed to keep up with these advances. The strategic decisions made by academic libraries on how to engage with the culture of innovation and business play a key role in shaping the definition and scope of emerging technologies (Secundo et al., 2020). Historical Context of Technology Adoption in Libraries Ever since the advent of printing, libraries have used existing and emerging technologies to collect information and provide access to services (Fagbola et al., 2021 ). These technologies have made traditional methods of producing and storing documents more widespread. The technology of libraries is not only about the physical space but also encompasses how books and materials are made available to the user community (Egorov et al., 2020 ). A new technology that aligns with the mission of a library and addresses changes in user needs, expectations, and behaviour has the potential to be quite impactful, it doesn't just replace established practices with faster or more efficient ones. Equally important is whether transformative technology has become fully integrated into the library and its often-complex environment (ODonnell & Anderson 2022 ). The extensive body of literature surrounding the optimisation of established library technologies has been a focal point of research in the library and information science fields for many years (Fagbola et al., 2021 ). Recent studies have also extensively reviewed and compared document delivery technologies, to the point where conducting a meta-review of these studies would be warranted (Tammaro, 2020; Lippincott, 2021 ; Gusenbauer & Haddaway, 2020 ). The objectives of academic libraries, enabled by technology, remain consistent with those in place since the beginning of libraries, which is to provide access to and preserve the cultural and intellectual record (Ocloo & King, 2022 ). However, to address the challenges of a digital future, libraries will assess how to best support user needs by determining the most effective way to provide technology for user access if access is the main concern. Recent studies have provided a more specific definition of the role of technology in libraries, particularly from the perspective of university libraries, which integrate innovative technologies, both traditional and nontraditional, to meet the evolving needs of their patrons (Amarasekara and Marasinghe 2020 ; Rafique et al. 2020). Research carried out by Viji, Najmusher, Rajkumar, Mohanraj, Nachiappan, Neelakandan and Jagajeevan (2024) points out that the integration of RFID technology represents a paradigm shift in library operations by going beyond traditional methods and effectively addressing inherent challenges. This technological integration lays the foundation for a more user-centred, efficient, and streamlined library experience. The authors further reiterated that RFID technology offers a wide range of benefits for library management systems, including improved efficiency, enhanced security, streamlined processes, and better user experiences. By leveraging RFID technology, libraries can optimise their operations, provide better services to patrons, and adapt to the evolving digital age effectively (Tahil, 2021 ). Over the past few decades, academic libraries have undergone significant changes in the services they offer to meet the evolving information needs of their users. These changes are driven in part by technological advancements, which have become an integral part of the academic library landscape (Ocholla & Ocholla, 2020 ; Deja et al., 2021 ). As expressed by the authors, libraries are constantly grappling with meeting user demands and expectations while also managing limited resources. Additionally, they face the dilemma of early adoption of technology, weighing the high costs and potential rejection against the risk of being perceived as outdated if they wait to implement it. This dilemma puts libraries in a challenging position as they strive to navigate the ever-changing landscape of technological innovation (Rafiq et al. 2021; Garoufallou & Gaitanou 2021 ). Research Methodology To learn more about how academic libraries are integrating and implementing emerging technology, this study used a systematic literature review process. The review employed a methodical approach to search, select and evaluate relevant papers from a range of databases and journals. Literature Search Using online resources like Scopus, Web of Science, Semantic Scholar, and Google Scholar, a thorough search was carried out. Keyword combinations pertaining to academic libraries, emerging technologies, and implementation were included in the search terms. For example, "academic libraries" AND "emerging technologies" AND "implementation" AND "academic libraries" AND "technology integration" AND "academic libraries" AND "technology adoption" To guarantee the applicability and timeliness of the results, the search was restricted to the following specific inclusion and exclusion: Inclusion Criteria Articles focusing on academic libraries Articles discussing the adoption/implementation or integration of emerging technologies Articles published in peer-reviewed journals or conference proceedings Articles published in English between 2015 and 2024 Exclusion criteria: Articles not related to libraries Articles not discussing emerging technologies Articles not addressing implementation or integration of technologies in libraries Articles published before 2015 or after 2024 Articles not published in English Study Selection Process Extracting and Analysing Data To gather pertinent data from the chosen articles, a data extraction form was created. Examples of this data include: The year of publication; the author(s), Name of journal or conference, Research goals or queries for the research, Techniques applied. Justification for the review As information and communication technologies are evolving so quickly and have a big impact on library operations and services, it is important to research how to integrate emerging technologies into academic libraries. It is becoming increasingly important to comprehend how these technologies are incorporated and deployed as academic libraries work to satisfy the evolving needs of their patrons. The goal of this literature review is to summarise the body of knowledge regarding the adoption and incorporation of new technologies in academic libraries, emphasising successful strategies, obstacles, and the wider implications on library services. This review is expected to help library professionals, managers, and officials make educated decisions on technology adoption and resource allocation by analysing the current state of the field and offering insightful analysis. Objectives of the review The primary objectives of the literature review were to: Identify and categorize emerging technologies that are currently being implemented in academic libraries. Analyse the strategies and methodologies employed by academic libraries in the implementation and integration of these technologies. Evaluate the impact of emerging technologies on library services, user engagement, and overall operational efficiency. Explore the challenges and barriers faced by academic libraries in adopting and integrating emerging technologies. Provide recommendations for best practices in the implementation of emerging technologies in academic libraries based on the findings from the literature. Highlight gaps in the existing literature and suggest areas for future research to further enhance the understanding of technology integration in academic libraries. By achieving these objectives, the literature review will contribute to the body of knowledge regarding the role of emerging technologies in academic libraries and support the ongoing evolution of library services in the digital age. Current Trends and Emerging Technologies in Academic Libraries Strategies and Methodologies Employed by Academic Libraries in the Implementation and Integration of Emerging Technologies Academic libraries are increasingly adopting emerging technologies to enhance their services and meet the evolving needs of users. The literature reveals various strategies and methodologies employed by these institutions in the implementation and integration of these technologies such as; staff training, creative technology adoption, collaborative initiatives, user-centric techniques, and ongoing evaluation. Academic libraries can boost user engagement, improve services, and quickly adjust to the ever-changing information world by implementing these techniques. Below are few strategies being adopted based on the reviewed literature: 1. User-Centred Methodologies In order to guarantee that the technology put in place satisfy the unique wants of their patrons, a lot of university libraries employ user-centric solutions. Makerspaces : Libraries are setting up makerspaces to promote user creativity and collaboration. These areas are meant to encourage creativity and hands-on learning by letting people work with cutting-edge technologies like robots and 3D printing. Makerspaces, for example, have been shown to improve user and librarian motivation and interdisciplinary teamwork (cln, & Dewa, 2020; Masenya, 2023). Digital Literacy Programmes: By including technology training into their offerings, libraries are concentrating on improving students' digital literacy. This comprises classes and materials that teach students how to use digital technologies efficiently, resulting in a user base that is savvier with technology (Rafi, Jian-ming, & Ahmad, 2019). 2. Collaborative Initiatives According to Manaseer, Alawneh, & Asoudi (2019), One of the most important tactics for integrating emerging technologies into academic libraries is collaboration. Interdepartmental Partnerships: To better utilise resources and expertise, libraries are forming more and more partnerships with other departments within their universities. This cooperative strategy guarantees that the institution's overall educational objectives are in line with technological integration. To improve service delivery, academic libraries and IT departments might collaborate to create integrated information systems. Community Engagement: A successful technology implementation depends on interacting with stakeholders and the larger community. Libraries frequently hold focus groups and surveys to get input on the needs and preferences of their patrons, which helps them with their technology adoption plans (Hamad, Al-Fadel, & Fakhouri, 2022). 3. Using Cutting-Edge Technologies Research shows that university libraries are increasingly adopting some cutting-edge technologies. Artificial Intelligence and Chatbots: To enhance user services, libraries are investigating the usage of chatbots powered by AI. By helping users with reference questions and navigating library systems, these chatbots can improve information access and lighten the strain for library workers (Adetayo, 2023). Internet of Things (IoT): To improve user experiences and streamline operations, several libraries are incorporating IoT technologies. IoT can be utilised, for example, to offer individualised services based on user behaviour and to manage inventories intelligently (Igbinovia & Okuonghae 2021). 4. Training and Career Advancement Academic libraries emphasise the significance of staff training and professional development in order to incorporate developing technology in an effective manner. Workshops and Ongoing Education: Libraries are spending money on educational initiatives that provide librarians the know-how to properly handle and apply new technologies. To help librarians stay up to date with the latest technological trends, this includes workshops on the newest digital tools and platforms (Moonasar 2024). Leadership Development: To promote an innovative and flexible culture, several libraries are concentrating on helping librarians hone their leadership abilities. To empower librarians to be proactive in the adoption of technology, this involves training in strategic planning and technology integration (Moonasar 2024). 5. Assessment and Evaluation Anene & Achebe (2024) stated that it is essential to continuously assess how well technology is being implemented to make sure it is efficient and meets user needs. Feedback methods: To evaluate the effects of recently integrated technologies, libraries are using a variety of feedback methods, including surveys and usage data. Libraries may make well-informed decisions regarding their future technology investments with the use of this data-driven method. Benchmarking: A few libraries compare their technology integration plans to other organisations' best practices. Libraries can use this comparative study to pinpoint areas that need improvement and implement peer-recommended successful practices. Challenges in Adopting Emerging Technologies in Libraries The adoption and integration of new technologies in academic libraries offer various advantages, such as transforming service delivery, increasing human engagement, retraining staff, supporting research, accessing digital materials, preserving content, expanding outreach, enhancing institutional relevance and identity, and reorganizing space. However, there are also risks and challenges associated with these benefits. The consequential of addressing these challenges include the transformation of traditional library services into more interactive, personalized, and user-centred services through emerging technologies, which also provide more convenient access to services, particularly for users in remote locations and further allow libraries to expand their public service and outreach. According to Cox (2022), some of the challenges faced by academic libraries in integrating emerging technologies include, inability to keep up with rapid technological advancements, lack of financial resources, resistance to change from library staff, and cybersecurity concerns. Further notable challenges were identified by other researchers as follows: Disability friendliness: The progress of technology can have adverse effects on individuals with disabilities, as more and more contents are being digitized without prioritizing accessibility. Academic libraries need to make sure that they provide assistive technologies like text-to-voice for their users and collaborate with content creators to create products that make use of both current and upcoming accessibility technologies (Fernández-Batanero et al.2022). Low IT Skills of Librarians: Some librarians do not possess the essential technological expertise needed to provide efficient services or effectively aid students. As a result, this can cause a lack of certainty in utilizing and integrating new technologies (Saibakumo 2023; Okunlaya et al., 2022; Chiu & Wong, 2023) Embracing the Need for Radical Change: It is now a necessity for academic libraries to embrace radical changes in technology and innovation to stay relevant in the digital age. Cheng et al., (2020) stated that, with data increasingly stored in digital form in the cloud, academic libraries must reassess their acquisition strategies and the nature of the services they provide. This highlights the need for Association of Research Libraries (ARLs) to work with educators and others to find ways to integrate their contributions into academic programs. Economic and Political Pressures: Academic and research libraries are encountering increasing economic difficulties due to the accelerated pace of research production and publication. Molnar (2023) claimed that declining student enrolment, escalating subscription expenses, and declining government support contribute to the necessity for more streamlined procedures by these academic libraries. Implementing new technologies can be a costly endeavour, and the political environment may present obstacles to ARL's fundamental values of intellectual freedom. Benefits of Adopting Emerging Technologies in Academic Libraries According to Beck, Bergenholtz, Bogers, Brasseur, Conradsen, Di Marco, ... & Xu, (2022), integrating new and emerging technologies into academic libraries presents opportunities such as enhancing user experience, improving access to digital resources, and increasing collaboration with other departments. Therefore, academic libraries must carefully consider the benefits and challenges of emerging technologies to effectively integrate them. The following benefits were discussed by various authors; Enhancing Information Services: Newly developed technologies have the potential to improve current library amenities and introduce novel services, including activities like data analysis, data organization, and academic knowledge exchange. These technologies according to Saibakumo (2021), have the capability to simplify the research procedure and guarantee adequate exposure for academic library patrons' research results. Improving User Experience: AI-powered chatbots can instantly respond to user inquiries, while VR/AR can produce immersive educational experiences (Adeyeye, S. & Oladokun, T. A. 2023). Cost Savings and Efficiency: Emerging technologies can help academic libraries cut costs through efficiencies. For instance, RFID technology can improve inventory management and theft detection, while cloud computing can reduce the need for on-premises infrastructure (Viji et al., 2024). Similarly, the use of open-source software has been shown to significantly lower costs for academic libraries (Kutu & Olajide, 2020). Integration with Academic Programs : The integration of new technologies in library educational programs can improve teaching and learning methods. This may include incorporating VR/AR for interactive learning experiences and utilizing AI-based tools for individualized learning guidance (Khasawneh, 2024; Denga and Denga 2024). Successful Examples of AI Implementation in Libraries One notable example is Georgetown University Library, which implemented an AI-powered chatbot to improve access to library resources and services for students and faculty (Harisanty et al., 2023). Another example of AI in libraries is the use of AI algorithms to analyze user preferences and borrowing history to offer personalized reading recommendations, enhancing the user experience (Isiaka et al., 2024). The integration of AI technologies in academic libraries also extends to collection development and management, where AI algorithms are used to analyze usage statistics and identify patterns in user behavior to optimize resource allocation and purchasing decisions. The employment of virtual assistants can help users navigate through the vast resources available in libraries, making it easier for them to find relevant information (Kumar & Jyoti, 2024). AI-driven tools enhance the efficiency of cataloging and classification processes, which ensures that library materials are accurately organized and easily discoverable. By using AI-driven tools, libraries can improve the accessibility of resources, resulting in a more user-friendly environment and promoting lifelong learning (Isiaka et al., 2024). AI applications, such as intelligent cataloging systems, can automate the organization and categorization of resources, saving time for library staff (Kumar & Jyoti, 2024). Academic libraries worldwide have noticed promising initial outcomes from some products and have already adopted these technologies and begun to enjoy their practical advances. They include systems for library management, information resource management, and access robots (Saibakumo, 2021). However, the environments in which AI solutions are operating in libraries are widely diverse, and the experience with each library would not necessarily be transferrable to another. Nevertheless, case-based experience is valuable for those libraries just beginning their optimization journey. Among the successful examples of AI implementation in libraries, language processing literature reviewing chat service and favorable key performance indicators for the IEEE Xplore Multi search service can be mentioned (Uzwyshyn, 2022). Impact of Emerging Technologies on Library Services and User Experience Martínez-Bravo et al., (2022) discussed the issues on emerging technologies, according to them; a number of these new and emerging technologies provide great promise in helping libraries to serve their patrons better. Using new technologies as learning tools is a financial investment in the development of 21st-century skills, and libraries can play an important role in helping users develop these skills (Isiaka et al., 2024). Libraries are using technology to offer users more convenient access to materials, create more engaging learning experiences, and enhance overall services. Academic libraries are increasingly seen as partners in research with their parent institutions. They have also responded to the competition with alternative learning spaces, such as data cafes and learning commons. They have become more engaged, creating a variety of visually appealing learning spaces and interactive programmes to attract and retain their users (Turner et al., 2013). The application of intelligent technologies in academic libraries can increase the ability of academic libraries to provide quality research support services for researchers. Reference services for librarians and academic libraries are important in academic libraries (Anafo et al., 2020). As stated in Wani et al. (2023), the wider scope of this research service includes both library facilities open to public users and the use of online reference services, either via e-mail or chat, to cooperate with faculty and staff who direct research activities to ensure quality research. According to the authors, reference services are the most satisfactory academic library service among all library services. In addition, as a leader in providing authoritative sources of information, reference services are considered vital links to innovative knowledge creation, research, and learning in the academic community. Therefore, reference services may benefit from several of the abilities inherent in intelligent systems. Offering relevant research assistance enhances the value of services provided to students and researchers (O'Dwyer et al., 2023). Kastrati (2018) collected 151 university students' opinions on the use of chatbots in universities. The study revealed that 60.93% of participants believed that chatbots were useful in involving students in their classes. This means that chatbots can understand the needs of students and provide them with the correct information, guiding them in the right direction. Chatbots have the ability to think like students and implement tasks in the same way they operate. The author estimated that AI will become the primary means of solving customer-related issues by approximately 2025. Currently, academic libraries offer minimal, human-assisted reference services. However, implementing AI solutions can automate simple reference questions and save staff time, which can be used for deeper and higher-value research services (Watermeyer et al., 2024). Ethical and Privacy Considerations in Technology Adoption Librarians inherently apply ethical codes and principles that international, national, and professional bodies have explicitly or implicitly set forth when performing professional duties, such as creating, interpreting, or distributing information. The ALA has implemented guidelines and explored the consequences related to morality and honesty in the utilisation of information technology settings, especially the Internet and similar accessible networks, because of the novel ethical dilemmas that emerge when information and communication shift to digital environments. According to Raab (2020), this issue prompted a revision of the ALA's code of ethics in 2008, which, recently included in the code that library professionals are responsible for safeguarding every library user's entitlement to privacy and discretion and that the library must uphold each user's right to privacy, including the use of electronic resources. Although libraries implement information technologies in response to user needs and rely on other institutions' security practices and policies, some authors argue that libraries should think more critically about the privacy and ethical implications of their technology decisions (Stahl & Eke, 2024). Data Protection and Privacy Regulations In the past, many libraries were unable to benefit from early cloud services, like cloud-based library systems, due to restrictions within their own countries. According to Owate and Iroeze (2023), the Data Protection Act imposes limitations even on hosting a library catalogue on internet servers in the USA. Research indicates that using developing technology in libraries frequently entails gathering and storing user data, which presents serious concerns about privacy and adherence to data protection laws like the Data Protection Act. This statute places restrictions on how data can be maintained and hosted, even on internet servers in the USA, by requiring libraries to guarantee the protection of sensitive information and library resources. The difficulties encountered by information workers in libraries, including cybersecurity threats and the requirement to adhere to privacy laws, also highlight how the Data Protection Act affects how library services are run, especially in this digital era. Academic libraries are increasingly adopting emerging technologies like cloud computing to improve services and protect research data (Aviamu, Popoola, and Atuase 2019; Yakubu, Ibrahim, and Yahaya 2021). However, the authors pointed out that, data security and privacy concerns have hindered adoption, especially in developing countries. The authors further stated that some of the most pressing concerns include data breaches, unauthorized access, data leaks, lack of institutional policies and guidelines for selecting cloud service providers and inadequate safeguards to protect sensitive information. Data Protection Legislation and Impact on Libraries According to Avuglah et al., (2020), the evolution of data protection legislation is shaped by global integration, advancing technologies, and the desire to shield individuals from data-centric business strategies; for instance, Ghana introduced the Data Protection Act 2012 (Act 843) to tackle escalating worries about personal privacy and the repercussions of data breaches. Generally, these laws seek to establish a uniform groundwork for safeguarding privacy and data amidst the rise of new scientific developments and technologies (Esayas, 2024). Future Directions and Predictions for Technology Integration in Academic Libraries Despite the beneficial impact of these technologies in academic libraries, many challenges persist. The study done by Ashiq et al., (2021) found that academic libraries not only have to deal with constraints like budget funding, inadequate technical support, resistance and challenges from users, but they also have to manage security issues and evaluate different types of digital libraries, social networking, and community-based projects. All these issues need to be addressed and solved in order to adopt and integrate new technologies effectively and efficiently into the academic library system. The integration of technology in academic libraries is poised for significant evolution in the coming years, driven by advancements in various emerging technologies. The following key trends and predictions outline the future directions for this integration: Increased use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) In order to improve user services, automate repetitive processes, and offer individualised user experiences, academic libraries are anticipated to further integrate AI technologies. AI can help with data analysis, cataloguing, and reference services, all of which increase overall operational effectiveness. Expansion of Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) According to Yensathit et al., (2024), the usage of virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) technologies is expected to increase, providing immersive learning experiences and virtual library tours. According to recent research showing positive user satisfaction with metaverse applications in libraries indicates that, this trend will increase user engagement and offer creative ways to access and interact with library content. Integration of the Internet of Things (IoT) Internet of Things (IoT) technologies are expected to revolutionise library services by providing location-based services, smart resource management, and enhanced user interactions, according to Bagavathi's 2023 prediction, IoT solutions for self-service checkouts, real-time inventory tracking, and customised notifications may be implemented by many academic libraries to improve user satisfaction and convenience. Focus on Big Data and Data Analytics It is anticipated that big data analytics would be used more frequently in libraries, enabling them to make better decisions, allocate resources more efficiently, and comprehend user behaviour. In order to improve service delivery, libraries are expected to invest in technology that make managing and analysing massive datasets easier (Manaseer, Alawneh, & Asoudi, 2019). Emphasis on Digital Literacy and Training According to Rafi, Jian-ming, and Ahmad (2019), there will be a greater focus on digital literacy initiatives for staff and patrons as technology is incorporated into library services. In order to promote a culture of continuous learning, academic libraries will need to offer training so that patrons can use new technologies and traverse them with ease. Collaborative and Open Access Initiatives Adeyeye and Oladokun (2023) predicted that, academic libraries, technological companies, and educational institutions will probably work together more in the future to share resources and expertise; Initiatives pertaining to open access will keep gaining popularity, encouraging the dissemination of research findings and raising the profile of scholarly publications. Sustainability and Ethical Considerations According to Sulaiman (2021), as libraries implement new technologies, there will be a greater emphasis on data privacy, security, and fair access to technology, among other ethical and sustainable issues. Libraries will have to create guidelines that take these worries into account while utilising technology for the greater good. Adoption of Blockchain Technology According to Khan et al., (2023), blockchain technology has the potential to be implemented in academic libraries to facilitate safe transactions, manage copyright, and improve transparency in academic publications. This system could guarantee the integrity of academic results and expedite procedures linked to digital rights management. According to these projections, academic libraries will develop into more user-focused, technologically sophisticated, and integrated parts of the larger educational ecosystem, which will ultimately strengthen their capacity to support research and learning. Potential Impact of Emerging Technologies on Library Workforce The key collaborative role of the librarian is to guide faculty and students to the means of authenticating quality academic resources in order to reinforce the purpose, value and dimensions of information resource use in all aspects of teaching, learning and the research function (Ashiq et al., 2021). It may therefore behoves academic libraries to emphasize the teaching skills and training of new or inexperienced librarians desiring such positions, as well as to further encourage experienced librarians to move towards initiating and creating researcher and learner-friendly library environments (Fagan et al., 2021). The use of technology has placed more emphasis on the instructional activities of teaching and learning, especially in academic library setting. According to David Wiley, teaching is especially critical in the networked world. Although the 'teacher' role of the librarian is not new, the use of new technology tools has made this function even more important, as both library staff and faculty find themselves searching for ways to improve the instruction process in the classroom and online domain. As the library increasingly digitizes essential texts and information sources and develops electronic teaching resources, the library instruction class will have new emphasis and importance for both faculty and students. Moreover, the advent of the digital library marketplace has presented librarians with an opportunity to further emphasize course preparation and course development as instructional roles. According to Bell and Kennan (2021), the teaching role of librarians on the academic campus has been historically undervalued, despite its critical importance in reinforcing the 'purpose, value and dimensions of information resource use in education. Several reports point out that the future migration to digital libraries and learning enterprises will require significant transformation in the structure, skills, and knowledge base of librarians and other information professionals, as well as the development of distinct new roles to complement their activities (Tait and Pierson 2022). Rajić (2022) asserts that, the proliferation of digital information, particularly on an interdisciplinary basis, is now causing many librarians to focus instead on teaching patrons the skills to navigate and retrieve information online. Conclusion and Summary of Key Findings The literature review on the implementation and integration of emerging technologies by academic libraries reveals a transformative landscape that is reshaping library services and user engagement. The results show that in an effort to improve user experiences and streamline operations, academic libraries are progressively implementing technologies like Blockchain, Augmented Reality (AR), Machine Learning (ML), and Artificial Intelligence (AI). In addition to streamlining procedures, these technologies enable creative services that adapt to the changing demands of patrons in the digital era. The evaluation emphasises how crucial staff training, user education, and strategic planning are to the effective integration of these technologies. It also highlights how academic libraries must continue to be proactive and flexible in the face of quickening technological change. In general, academic libraries are thought to need to incorporate innovative technology in order to remain relevant, encourage cooperation, and facilitate research and learning in modern learning environments. The collective wisdom shared by the researchers, scholars, and experts provided validating behavioral indicators about practices and services associated with adopting and integrating emerging technologies that are necessary to succeed in today's fast-paced environment. Based on the main findings in the areas of technology, organization, strategy, and the future, it is clear that success in the use of emerging technologies in academic libraries is not so much a function of new technology, but increases from an ability to develop a new, highly adaptable organizational form that can create organizational values of flexibility, service, and change. Recommendations To effectively adopt and integrate emerging technologies in academic libraries in the digital era, Owate and Iroeze (2023); Aviamu et al., (2019); Moruf and Dangani (2020), Kiran, Aziz and Lashari (2024) recommended that academic libraries should: Develop Institutional Policies and Guidelines - Develop clear institutional policies and guidelines for selecting and using cloud service providers, handling research data, and ensuring data privacy and security. - Establish collaborative synergies with university management to provide training for librarians on new technologies - Demonstrate readiness to protect user data through data protection policies embedded in library ICT policies. Provide User Education for Patrons - Provide privacy education for users on making informed decisions when using online library resources - Raise awareness among librarians and students about privacy concerns in online library environments - Implement user education initiatives to promote awareness and understanding of new technologies among library users, encouraging their adoption. Upgrade Librarian Skills and Knowledge - Ensure librarians upgrade their skills and knowledge to stay current with emerging technologies - Develop librarian competencies in areas like leadership, interpersonal skills, technological awareness, problem-solving, and systems thinking Leverage Emerging Technologies Strategically - Identify and adopt emerging technologies that can enhance library services and support academic needs - Utilize cloud computing to securely store and manage research data - Implement technologies like bibliographic citation management, instructional design, and electronic resource management software Collaboration with University Management Libraries should work closely with university management to secure funding and resources for technology integration and to develop a strategic plan for technology implementation. Focus on Accessibility Ensure that new technologies are accessible to all users, including those with disabilities, to promote inclusivity and equitable access to library resources. By developing clear policies, providing privacy education, upgrading librarian skills, and strategically leveraging emerging technologies, academic libraries can effectively adopt and integrate new innovations to improve services and support their parent institutions. This paper provides some insights on the new technologies emerging in the current information society and on how libraries are responding to satisfy patron needs through diversely innovative library services. The study adopted a systematic literature review method to search, select and evaluate pertinent papers from a range of databases and journals. This literature review offers supporting evidence to illustrate how academic libraries are adopting and integrating emerging technologies to enhance and support active teaching and research. The paper analysed current trends and emerging technologies in academic libraries, strategies employed by libraries, benefits and challenges; it also looked at the ethical considerations in implementing new technologies, the future of libraries with regards to technology and further highlighted some recommendations from the literature. The review is unique since it assessed various aspects of technologies used in academic libraries.
