Sex steroid receptors expression in ectopic endometrium in women with different forms of endometriosis
This study found that estradiol and progesterone receptor expression is significantly reduced in ectopic endometrium, especially in lesions farther from the uterus, in women with internal and external endometriosis compared to extragenital endometriosis.

The study examined expression of estradiol and progesterone receptors in heterotopic (ectopic) endometrium to assess how hormone-dependent receptor expression varies by localization and type of endometriosis. Uterine extirpation specimens were analyzed from 35 women with internal endometriosis (adenomyosis), 52 with external endometriosis, and 19 with extragenital endometriosis after lesion resection, using histological examination of receptor antigen expression. The authors found a significantly reduced prevalence of estradiol and progesterone receptor expression in the internal and external groups compared with the extragenital group, and receptor expression intensity decreased with increasing distance of endometriosis lesions from the uterus. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it compares sex steroid receptor expression in ectopic endometrium across internal, external, and extragenital forms of endometriosis.
