Abstract

This study examines the use of the definite article “the” in college application essays written by non-native speakers of English, focusing in particular on its “anaphoric” (backward-looking) and “cataphoric” (forward-looking) functions. The study analyzes ten essays written by Uzbek students and examines how they use “the” to create cohesion and improve the clarity of their narratives. A mixed methods approach was used, combining both quantitative analysis of frequency of article use and qualitative analysis of patterns in anaphoric and cataphoric references. The results show that non-native speakers use “that” strategically to maintain narrative flow, with anaphoric references occurring more frequently. The study highlights the importance of cohesive elements in challenging texts, such as college application essays, and provides practical advice for improving the teaching of English to non-native speakers.
