Abstract
Endometriosis is a highly variable condition - in presentation, severity and range of symptoms, organs affected, response to therapy and rate of recurrence. It is still one of the real enigmas of women's health, but is increasingly recognised to have a major genetic component. It occurs when tissue similar, but not identical, to endometrium grows in sites outside the uterus, typically on the peritoneum of the utero sacrals, broad ligaments, Pouch of Douglas, ovaries or deeper pelvic tissues.
