Whilst the Frankenstein metaphor circulates widely in architectural discourse, particularly following Liliane Wong’s identification of ‘Frankenstein Syndrome’ in 2016, no peer-reviewed study has systematically operationalised it as an analytical framework. This paper addresses that gap by developing a transferable diagnostic tool that integrates Mary Shelley’s literary metaphor with the Vitruvian triad ( firmitas, utilitas, venustas ), extended with Clarke and Kuipers’ proposed fourth virtue of dignitas (respect for heritage values). Through comparative analysis of three paradigmatic cases the Royal Ontario Museum Crystal (Libeskind, 2007), Port House Antwerp (Zaha Hadid Architects, 2016 ), and Elbphilharmonie Hamburg (Herzog & de Meuron, 2017) the study reveals a spectrum from parasitic failure to mutualistic success. The framework demonstrates that architectural ‘monstrosity’ emerges not from stylistic contrast per se , but from failures in structural integration ( firmitas ), functional coherence ( utilitas ), aesthetic synthesis ( venustas ), and heritage sensitivity ( dignitas ). The paper contributes to adaptive reuse theory by providing architects and scholars a systematic method for evaluating the phenomenological experience of architectural assemblage. Introduction Contemporary architectural practice increasingly turns to adaptive reuse as buildings outlive their original purposes and sustainability concerns make demolition less defensible. Yet the aesthetic and phenomenological dimensions of these interventions remain under-theorised. Existing conservation frameworks the Venice Charter, the Burra Charter address authenticity and cultural significance but provide little vocabulary for the experiential dimension of the joint, the seam, the disjunction. When does contrast become discord? When does innovation become monstrosity? The term ‘Frankenstein architecture’ has emerged in critical discourse as a pejorative label for buildings perceived as cobbled assemblages, evoking Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus , in which Victor Frankenstein animates a creature assembled from disparate body parts. Liliane Wong’s 2016 monograph Adaptive Reuse: Extending the Lives of Buildings coined ‘Frankenstein Syndrome’ to describe the incompatibility arising when a new and incompatible order is introduced within an existing one, noting that economically driven projects can more easily fall prey to an incompatibility between the existing and the new (Wong 2016 , 45). Lanz and Pendlebury’s 2022 critical review in The Journal of Architecture identifies the Frankenstein metaphor as a dominant leitmotiv in adaptive reuse discourse, yet their comprehensive survey reveals no systematic analytical application (Lanz and Pendlebury 2022 , 298). The concept circulates as evocative shorthand but lacks operationalisation as a diagnostic framework. This paper addresses that gap by transforming the Frankenstein metaphor from label into method. The central research question is: How can the Frankenstein metaphor be operationalised as a critical framework for evaluating adaptive reuse architecture, and what insights emerge from applying this framework through a Vitruvian analytical lens? The study hypothesises that perceived architectural ‘monstrosity’ results not from stylistic contrast alone but from specific failures across four dimensions: structural integration ( firmitas ), functional coherence ( utilitas ), aesthetic synthesis ( venustas ), and heritage sensitivity ( dignitas ). By analysing three paradigmatic cases representing different intervention typologies, architects, and reception outcomes, the paper develops a transferable diagnostic tool for scholars and practitioners. 2. Literature Review The literature review synthesises three distinct bodies of scholarship: adaptive reuse theory, monster theory and metaphor, and the Vitruvian analytical tradition. Their intersection reveals an unaddressed gap: existing adaptive reuse metaphors emphasise continuity and layering (palimpsest, translation, duet) whilst lacking critical vocabulary for the disjunctive, conflictual, and uncanny dimensions that the Frankenstein metaphor captures. 2.1. Adaptive Reuse Theory: From Translation to Transformation Fred Scott’s foundational On Altering Architecture (2008) frames adaptive reuse as ‘translation’ a process of carrying meaning across contexts that risks being doubly destructive, erasing both conservation potential and the possibility of genuinely new architecture (Scott 2008 , 35). Plevoets and Van Cleempoel’s Adaptive Reuse of the Built Heritage (2019) develops a typology of intervention strategies aemulatio, facadism, ruination evaluated against the criterion of genius loci. Stone’s 2023 contribution in Architecture employs Walter Benjamin’s vessel-fragment metaphor: adaptive reuse rescues the fragment of a building’s cultural meaning by placing it in a new functional vessel (Stone 2023 , 4). Most significantly for this study, Lanz and Pendlebury ( 2022 ) surveyed 150 adaptive reuse papers published between 2010 and 2020, finding that despite the Frankenstein metaphor’s currency in professional discourse, interdisciplinary engagement with literature and language studies remains underdeveloped (Lanz and Pendlebury 2022 , 310). They explicitly call for greater methodological borrowing from literary theory. Wong’s ‘Frankenstein Syndrome’ concept, though widely cited, lacks the analytical architecture necessary for systematic application. The present paper answers Lanz and Pendlebury’s call by providing that architecture. On the specific practice of facadism preserving only a building’s exterior shell whilst gutting its interior Plevoets’ 2021 Journal of Architecture article challenges the prevailing critique by identifying four distinct facadism typologies and invoking Baudrillard’s concept of simulacrum to reframe facade retention as legitimate architectural strategy (Plevoets 2021 , 387). This nuanced view complicates simplistic ‘Frankenstein’ accusations, suggesting that perceived monstrosity depends on execution quality rather than intervention type alone. 2.2. Monster Theory and Architectural Metaphor Jeffrey Jerome Cohen’s ‘Monster Culture (Seven Theses)’ (1996) establishes the theoretical foundation for monster studies. Cohen’s Thesis IV ‘The Monster Dwells at the Gates of Difference’ and Thesis VI ‘Fear of the Monster Is Really a Kind of Desire’ illuminate why architectural hybridity provokes such intense responses (Cohen 1996 , 7, 17). The monster embodies category crisis, resisting taxonomic placement. Buildings that belong neither fully to the past nor entirely to the present occupy the same liminal space, threatening the cognitive comfort of architectural classification. Shelley’s novel specifically addresses themes of unnatural creation, isolation of the Other, the dangers of unchecked ambition, and the potential for monstrosity when creations are severed from natural origins or societal integration. As Fisker, Heilmann, and Bagger demonstrate in their 2018 analysis connecting Frankenstein to Ruskin’s architectural theory, the novel’s concern with authentic making versus artificial assembly maps directly onto debates about heritage authenticity (Fisker, Heilmann, and Bagger 2018 , 152). Lakoff and Johnson’s Metaphors We Live By (1980/2003) provides the cognitive-linguistic foundation for using metaphor as analytical tool rather than mere rhetorical flourish. Conceptual metaphors structure how we understand abstract domains through concrete ones; the Frankenstein metaphor maps the domain of biological assembly (body parts, stitches, animation) onto architectural intervention (building elements, joints, functional activation). The recently published Metaphorical Practices in Architecture (Borree, Knuth, and Röger 2024 ) establishes that metaphors can function as both subject and method in architectural research, legitimising the present study’s approach. 2.3. The Vitruvian Framework: From Triad to Tetrad Vitruvius’s first-century BCE De architectura established the triadic foundation of architectural quality: firmitas (durability/structural soundness), utilitas (functionality/suitability to purpose), and venustas (beauty/aesthetic harmony). A 2025 empirical study by Selim, Mayhoub, and Abuzaid surveyed 136 architecture faculty across five national schools and found approximately 90 per cent affirm the framework’s substantial pedagogical benefit, with contemporary reinterpretation defining firmitas as structural-ecological responsibility, utilitas as programmatic-societal usefulness, and venustas as culturally embedded aesthetic value (Selim, Mayhoub, and Abuzaid 2025 , 8). Most critically for this study, Clarke and Kuipers ( 2022 ) propose dignitas (dignity/respect for heritage values) as a necessary fourth virtue specifically for adaptive reuse contexts. They observe that architects rarely detect heritage significance before drafting interventions, suggesting that dignitas functions as the missing conceptual link between technical excellence and cultural responsibility (Clarke and Kuipers 2022 , 247). This four-dimensional framework firmitas, utilitas, venustas, dignitas provides the analytical structure through which the Frankenstein metaphor will be operationalised. 2.4. The Identified Gap Existing adaptive reuse metaphors palimpsest (layered traces), translation (meaning carried across), duet (dialogue between eras) emphasise continuity, cooperation, and complementarity. They lack critical vocabulary for the disjunctive, the conflictual, the uncanny. The Frankenstein metaphor uniquely captures experiences of assemblage that provoke unease precisely because they resist harmonious integration. Yet no study has systematically operationalised this metaphor through a defined analytical framework capable of producing specific, falsifiable observations about architectural quality. This paper fills that gap. 3. Theoretical Framework: Operationalising the Frankenstein Metaphor The Frankenstein–Vitruvian diagnostic framework synthesises Shelley’s literary metaphor with architectural evaluation criteria. Table 1 presents the complete analytical structure. The ‘body’ is the existing structure; ‘organs’ are the transplanted contemporary elements; ‘stitches’ are the visible joints and interfaces; the ‘spark’ is the new programmatic life animating the composite; the ‘uncanny’ is the viewer’s phenomenological response of ambivalent unease; ‘sympathy or rejection’ traces public reception. Each Vitruvian dimension provides evaluative criteria: structural integration, functional coherence, aesthetic synthesis, and heritage sensitivity. 4. Methodology This research employs a qualitative, interpretive methodology combining literary analysis, conceptual framework development, and comparative case study analysis. The approach operates within an interpretivist epistemological paradigm, recognising that architectural meaning is socially constructed and accessible through critical interpretation (Groat and Wang 2013 , 125). 4.1. Research Strategy The research strategy integrates three approaches from Groat and Wang’s ( 2013 ) architectural research taxonomy: logical argumentation (developing the Frankenstein–Vitruvian framework through deductive reasoning), interpretive-historical research (analysing architectural discourse and reception histories), and case study (systematic comparison of three paradigmatic projects) (see Fig. 2 ). 4.2. Case Selection Criteria Three cases were selected using explicit criteria to enable analytical comparison. Following Yin’s ( 2009 ) guidance on multiple-case design, the cases represent: (1) different intervention typologies lateral parasite (ROM Crystal), elevated hat (Port House), stacked resurrection (Elbphilharmonie); (2) different architects representing distinct design philosophies Libeskind’s deconstructivism, Hadid’s parametricism, Herzog & de Meuron’s material minimalism; (3) different host-building eras early 20th century Neo-Romanesque, 1920s Hanseatic brick, 1960s industrial modernism; and (4) different reception outcomes from controversy to acclaim. This purposive sampling strategy ensures the framework is tested across varied conditions. 4.3. Data Sources Data sources include architectural drawings and documentation, photographic analysis, published critical reviews from both architectural press and general media, designer statements and project descriptions from practice websites, and scholarly analyses. Reception trajectories were traced through searches of architectural journals, newspaper archives, and digital media platforms covering the period from project announcement through at least five years post-completion. 5. Results: A Spectrum from Parasitism to Mutualism The three case studies reveal a spectrum of architectural hybridity. Analysed through the Frankenstein–Vitruvian framework, they progress from parasitic failure (ROM Crystal) through contested juxtaposition (Port House) to mutualistic success (Elbphilharmonie). 5.1. Royal Ontario Museum Crystal, Toronto (Daniel Libeskind, 2007): The Failed Creation Daniel Libeskind’s deconstructivist addition to the Royal Ontario Museum comprises five interlocking angular prisms clad in brushed aluminium and glass, inspired by the museum’s gem and mineral collection. The US $ 270 million project, completed in 2007, dramatically erupts from the 1914 Neo-Romanesque heritage building. Firmitas assessment. The Crystal’s five prismatic volumes are structurally independent from the historic building, connected only via bridges. This deliberate physical separation justified by Libeskind as respecting the host’s integrity created immediate technical problems. Within two years, the complex triangular glazing joints developed persistent leaks. The heavy steel frame supporting the cantilevered geometry requires substantial internal bracing visible in gallery spaces. In structural terms, the Crystal functions as parasite: physically attached but structurally autonomous, deriving support without contributing reinforcement. Utilitas assessment. Functional failures pervade the Crystal. Slanted walls make object display difficult; many vitrines must be custom-fabricated. Circulation is confusing; visitors become disoriented by the non-orthogonal geometry. The grand Spirit House staircase Libeskind’s signature spatial gesture proved so dysfunctional that the 2024 Open ROM renovation (US $ 130 million, Hariri Pontarini Architects) will eliminate it entirely, replacing it with conventional stairs and escalators. Architectural critic Alex Bozikovic summarised that the project produced an image that was never fully resolved into a building (Bozikovic 2017 ). The renovation acknowledges that the Crystal prioritised external iconicity over internal usability Shelley’s Victor Frankenstein valuing the act of creation over the creature’s viability. Venustas assessment. Public reception was immediately polarised. Philip Kennicott, architecture critic for the Washington Post and Pulitzer Prize winner, condemned the building as both aesthetically and functionally deficient (Kennicott 2007 ). The aesthetic issue is not stylistic contrast per se many successful adaptive reuses juxtapose contemporary forms with historic fabric but that the Crystal’s fractured geometry reads as arbitrary collision rather than deliberate dialogue. The sharp angles suggest violence: the Crystal appears to have smashed into the museum. The stitches the visible joints between old and new lack the careful detailing that might transform jarring disjunction into productive tension. Dignitas assessment. The Crystal demolished the museum’s 1982 Terrace Galleries to make way for its footprint. Whilst those galleries were not heritage-designated, their removal suggests a view of the existing building as substrate rather than culturally significant entity deserving respectful addition. Libeskind’s design prioritises his own iconographic vision over contextual sensitivity. The intervention treats the ROM’s historic wings as backdrop for architectural spectacle. Frankenstein diagnosis. Under the Šijaković and Perić ( 2018 ) biological symbiosis classification, the Crystal is parasitic: it depends on the host for site and support whilst disrupting the host’s formal logic and functional performance. The Frankenstein metaphor captures what palimpsest or duet metaphors miss: this is not layered traces or conversational exchange but unsanctioned creation provoking visceral rejection. The creature did not ask to be born; the museum did not ask for the Crystal. 5.2. Port House, Antwerp (Zaha Hadid Architects, 2016 ): The Hovering Alien Zaha Hadid Architects’ 2016 Port House converted a derelict 1922 fire station into the Antwerp Port Authority headquarters. The faceted glass and aluminium addition appears to float above the brick base on two sculptural concrete pillars, evoking both a diamond and a ship referencing Antwerp’s maritime heritage. Firmitas assessment. Unlike the ROM Crystal, the Port House new volume is structurally interdependent with the base. The two tapered concrete pillars transfer the upper volume’s load through the historic structure’s reinforced foundations. The diamond form was wind-tunnel tested to ensure structural resilience. The intervention required comprehensive seismic reinforcement of the existing building transforming rather than merely exploiting the host’s structural capacity. Utilitas assessment. The Port House successfully consolidates 500 employees previously scattered across the city. The open-plan floors in the new volume provide flexible workspace; circulation through central cores is efficient. Critically, the addition fulfils the competition brief’s requirement to preserve the fire station’s four historic facades whilst creating a distinctive civic landmark. Venustas assessment. Reception was mixed. The Architectural Review ’s Felix Mara questioned whether the new headquarters seemed aggressive toward its host building (Mara 2016 ). Yet others praised precisely this dynamism. The aesthetic tension is deliberate: Hadid’s practice argued the fire station was originally designed to include a never-built tower, making the new volume a historical completion rather than alien imposition. Dignitas assessment. The project preserved all four historic facades and maintained the building’s street presence. The competition brief mandated preservation, constraining architectural freedom but ensuring heritage sensitivity. Unlike the ROM Crystal’s demolition of existing fabric, the Port House respects the fire station’s formal identity whilst dramatically reinterpreting its potential. Frankenstein diagnosis. The Port House occupies a middle position on the parasitism-to-mutualism spectrum. Fisher-Gewirtzman’s ( 2016 ) ‘hat’ intervention typology applies: the addition sits atop rather than erupts through. The aesthetic provokes unease but functions successfully. The Frankenstein reading is complicated by the historical-completion argument: if the creature was always latent in the host’s DNA, is it truly monstrous? 5.3. Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg (Herzog & de Meuron, 2017): The Resurrected Body Herzog & de Meuron’s 2017 Elbphilharmonie placed a glass superstructure housing concert halls, hotel, and apartments atop the gutted 1963 Kaispeicher A warehouse. The wave-shaped facade references both Hamburg’s maritime identity and the warehouse’s functional past. Despite massive cost overruns (€866 million vs. €77 million estimated), the building transformed from reviled to beloved, named to Time Magazine’s ‘World’s 100 Greatest Places’ in 2018. Firmitas assessment. The warehouse was completely gutted its interior life removed whilst its shell was preserved as foundation and facade. The concert hall literally stands on the warehouse’s structural bones, reinforced with approximately 1,700 concrete piles. This creates a shared structural system: the historic warehouse enables the contemporary concert hall, which in turn justifies the warehouse’s preservation and adaptive strengthening. Under symbiosis classification, this is mutualistic. Utilitas assessment. The functional integration is exceptional. The curved escalator cutting through the warehouse creates a powerful spatial experience of moving through the past of Hamburg. The Plaza at the 37-metre junction open to the public functions as urban living room and threshold between city and building. The concert halls achieve world-class acoustics through purpose-built design within the warehouse envelope. Function and form achieve symbiosis. Venustas assessment. The aesthetic reception trajectory is remarkable. During construction, the project was widely condemned; cost overruns and delays created public hostility. Post-completion, opinion reversed. The shimmering glass facade became Hamburg’s defining image; The Guardian ’s architectural critic Rowan Moore described the building as a rare achievement that fulfilled its ambitions (Moore 2017 ). The material contrast industrial brick and elegant glass feels deliberate rather than arbitrary. The stitches are carefully detailed; the joint reads as intentional transformation rather than violent collision. Dignitas assessment. The question of dignitas is complex. The warehouse was gutted entirely; only the shell survived. This could be read as profound disrespect treating the building as mere facade. Yet Herzog & de Meuron argued the warehouse had no interior heritage significance; its value lay in its massive brick presence defining the harbour skyline. By preserving that presence whilst inserting world-class cultural infrastructure, the intervention elevated the warehouse’s civic status from abandoned industrial relic to treasured landmark. Frankenstein diagnosis. The Elbphilharmonie enacts Shelley’s narrative differently than the ROM Crystal. This is not unsanctioned creation but resurrection: the warehouse was dead (abandoned, functionless), and the intervention restored life (cultural purpose, public access, urban pride). The creature still bears visible stitches the joint between brick and glass is dramatically legible but the synthesis succeeds because all four Vitruvian dimensions align. The public moved from rejection to sympathy because the building demonstrably works: structurally integrated, functionally exceptional, aesthetically distinctive, and contextually sensitive despite its dramatic transformation. 6. Discussion: From Metaphor to Method The comparative analysis reveals that the Frankenstein metaphor’s power lies not in its capacity to label buildings ‘monstrous’ but in its ability to diagnose why certain interventions provoke that response. The three cases map onto a clear spectrum: the ROM Crystal fails across all four Vitruvian dimensions (parasitic relationship, structural independence, functional dysfunction, aesthetic discord, heritage insensitivity); the Port House succeeds functionally and structurally whilst remaining aesthetically contested (commensalist relationship, some take without significant harm); the Elbphilharmonie succeeds across all dimensions, transforming initial rejection into eventual embrace (mutualistic relationship, both parties benefit). What the Frankenstein framework reveals that existing adaptive reuse metaphors miss is the phenomenology of disjunction. Palimpsest suggests layered traces; translation implies carried meaning; duet evokes dialogue. These metaphors emphasise continuity and cooperation. The Frankenstein metaphor uniquely captures experiences of assemblage that provoke unease precisely because they resist harmonious integration. Shelley’s novel explores the consequences of creation divorced from responsibility Victor abandons his creature, refusing to guide its socialisation. Architectural ‘Frankenstein syndrome’ similarly emerges when design ambition proceeds without adequate attention to structural integration, functional viability, aesthetic coherence, or heritage sensitivity. The four-dimensional diagnostic framework ( firmitas, utilitas, venustas, dignitas ) demonstrates that perceived monstrosity is not inevitable in adaptive reuse. Stylistic contrast alone does not produce Frankenstein architecture. The Elbphilharmonie juxtaposes industrial brick with crystalline glass as dramatically as the ROM Crystal juxtaposes Neo-Romanesque stone with deconstructivist aluminium. The difference lies in execution quality across all four dimensions. Herzog & de Meuron’s design achieves what Venturi termed ‘difficult unity’ a coherent whole from disparate parts. Libeskind’s design achieves only disjunction. This finding has practical implications. Architects approaching adaptive reuse should not avoid bold formal gestures from fear of creating ‘Frankenstein architecture’. Rather, they must attend carefully to the four diagnostic dimensions. The visible joints the ‘stitches’ between old and new demand as much design attention as the forms they connect. The Elbphilharmonie’s curved escalator cutting through the warehouse exemplifies this: the intervention is architecturally legible (you understand you are transitioning between eras) whilst experientially fluid (the movement feels inevitable rather than jarring). 7. Conclusion This paper has transformed the Frankenstein metaphor from evocative label into systematic analytical framework. By operationalising Shelley’s literary creation through the four-dimensional Vitruvian lens ( firmitas, utilitas, venustas, dignitas ), the study provides architects and scholars a transferable diagnostic tool for evaluating adaptive reuse interventions. The framework’s power lies in its capacity to move beyond simplistic aesthetic judgements towards nuanced analysis of why certain assemblages succeed whilst others fail. The comparative case analysis demonstrates that architectural ‘monstrosity’ emerges from compounded failures across multiple dimensions rather than from stylistic contrast alone. The ROM Crystal fails structurally, functionally, aesthetically, and culturally. The Port House succeeds structurally and functionally whilst remaining aesthetically contested. Additionally, the interpretive methodology relies on published reception histories; ethnographic research with building users might reveal experiential dimensions not captured in architectural criticism. Ultimately, the Frankenstein–Vitruvian framework offers adaptive reuse practice a critical tool for self-evaluation. Before pronouncing a design complete, architects might ask: Have we attended adequately to structural integration? Functional coherence? Aesthetic synthesis? Heritage sensitivity?
