A total of 65 additives were found in the 603 snacks studied. The most common additives were E500 (Sodium carbonates), which is used as an acidity regulator, anticaking agent, and emulsifying agent, present in 35.7% of the products. Next was E322 (Lecithin), an antioxidant and emulsifier, found in 31.6% of the products. E551 (Silicon dioxide), a carrier and anti-foaming agent, was present in 26.4% of the products. E102 (Tartrazine), a color, was detected in 16.7% of the snacks. Also, the most commonly used colors, preservatives, acidity regulators, antioxidants, sweeteners, thickeners/stabilizers/emulsifiers, and flavor enhancers in Syrian child-oriented foods were determined. Some words like perfumes, enhancers, and natural or synthetic flavors were mentioned without specific additives being identified. Introduction Food additives are substances added to food to serve various functions such as preserving flavor, enhancing taste and appearance, extending shelf life, ensuring food safety and quality, and also playing a crucial role in enhancing nutritional value (Pașca et al., 2018 ; Wu, 2021 ; Wu et al., 2022 ). They can be of natural or synthetic origin and are used to counter food perishability, prevent bacterial degradation, give or restore color, and impart flavor to foods (Wu et al., 2022 ). Some additives are directly added to food and ingredients, while others are added indirectly through contact with packaging materials (Linke et al., 2018 ). The use of food additives is regulated by food and drug administrations in most countries. While food additives can bring sensory enjoyment and commercial convenience, they may also pose potential risks to human health (Pașca et al., 2018 ). Therefore, it is important to conduct a quantitative analysis of the content of food additives (Wu, 2021 ) Consumption of ultra-processed foods targeted at children often contains food additives such as flavorings, colorings, and emulsifiers (Braga et al., 2021 ). A study conducted in Saudi Arabia found that school-going children had a high intake of juices and drinks, ice cream, and cakes, which often contained artificial food color additives, including Brilliant Blue and Tartrazine (Asif Ahmed et al., 2021 ). The American Academy of Pediatrics has identified bisphenols, phthalates, and nitrates/nitrites as food additives of concern for children's health (McBride, 2018 ). Synthetic chemicals used as food additives, both direct and indirect, have been associated with potential adverse effects on children's health, particularly in minority and low-income populations (Trasande et al., 2018 ). Child-targeted food products, such as ready-to-eat breakfast cereals, granola bars, and yogurts, have been found to have a less favorable nutritional composition compared to products intended for the general population, with higher content of carbohydrates, total sugars, free sugars, and sodium (Budrewicz et al., 2017 ). This study endeavors to assess the food additives present in child-oriented foods available in the Syrian Market. This is due to the significance and potential hazards posed by food additives, coupled with the absence of prior research on this subject in Syria. 2. Material and Methods First, a tour of the popular and central commercial markets was conducted, through which most of the child-oriented products available in the market were recorded such as biscuits, potato chips, juices and other products. This tour occurred over two months and included markets in three Syrian cities: Lattakia, Tartous and Hama. Then, the data derived from food labels were organized into tables that included all of the following: Trade name, company name, product type, ingredients, and shelf life. Table 1 shows the distribution of 603 child-oriented products from food Syrian companies into four categories. Table 1 Classification of Syrian child-oriented products into four categories Category Number of Products Potato chips 220 Biscuits 200 Juices and beverages 46 Other 137 Total of studied child-oriented products 603 These categories were evaluated, separately, according to their content of food additives. The investigation ultimately sought to identify the food additives that were predominantly utilized in these particular products, regarding their labels. The food additives that exist in these products were classified according to (Laganà et al., 2017). 3. Results and Discussions 65 food additives were detected in the 603 studied snacks. Among them, E500 (Sodium carbonates) was the most present in 215 products (35.7%). E500 is considered an acidity regulator, Anticaking agent and emulsifying agent (Laganà et al., 2017). Then, E322 (Lecithin) was present in 159 products (31.6%). E332 is considered an antioxidant, and emulsifier. E551 (Silicon dioxide) was present in 159 products (26.4%). E551 is considered a carrier, and anti-foaming agent. E102 (Tartrazine) was present in 101 products (16.7%). E102 is considered a color. Conclusion Child-oriented food labels should be more precise, particularly when it comes to food additives. Children are highly susceptible to the potential negative effects of additives due to their developing bodies and immune systems. It is crucial for parents and caregivers to have accurate information about the specific additives used in children's foods so they can make informed decisions regarding their child's diet. Rather than vague terms like "artificial flavors" or "coloring," labels should provide detailed information on the specific additives present, including any potential allergens or known health risks associated with them. Additionally, labeling should clearly state whether these additives have been tested and approved for consumption by children, along with the recommended daily intake limits. Improving the precision of child-oriented food labels concerning additives not only empowers parents but also helps create a healthier environment for our children, ensuring they receive appropriate nutrition while minimizing exposure to potentially harmful substances. Conclusion

Child-oriented food labels should be more precise, particularly when it comes to food additives.

References

Ahmed MA, Al-Khalifa AS, Al-Nouri DM, El-Din MFS (2021) Dietary intake of artificial food color additives containing food products by school-going children.
