Laparoscopic Right Hemicolectomy Using a Fluorescent Ureteral Catheter for Ascending Colon Metastasis of Endometrial Cancer in a Patient with Horseshoe Kidney: A Case Report.

IntroductionHorseshoe kidney is a rare congenital anomaly frequently associated with anatomical variations in the vascular and urinary systems. In colorectal surgery, these abnormalities increase the risk of inadvertent injury and require particular attention.Case presentationWe report the case of a 61-year-old woman (body mass index 40) who had undergone a radical hysterectomy for endometrial cancer 27 years earlier and had been followed up in our gynecology department. An elevation in tumor marker levels was noted during follow-up, and metastasis of endometrial cancer was suspected in the ascending colon. To minimize the risk of ureteral injury during minimally invasive surgery in an obese patient who had a history of hysterectomy and a horseshoe kidney, laparoscopic right hemicolectomy with fluorescent ureteral navigation was performed. The right ureter was clearly identified using fluorescence during surgery and completely secured. The histological examination revealed endometrial cancer metastasis in the ascending colon. In this patient with obesity and a horseshoe kidney, laparoscopic surgery using a fluorescent ureteral catheter was successful. A review of the relevant literature is also provided herein.
