A Descriptive Review on the Association of Insulin Resistance/Hyperinsulinemia with Increased Mortality Risk

Abstract

The analysis of the literature clearly shows that chronic increase of circulating insulin levels associated with insulin resistance (IR) cause, over time, great damage to our body. In fact, they are related to the development of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cellular senescence, cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. This descriptive review of literature aims to verify whether insulin resistance (IR) with associated hyperinsulinemia (Hyperins) may be directly associated with an increase of cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. There are all the criteria to consider IR/Hyperins a serious risk factor, which could be strongly related to an increase in mortality. The analysis of the manuscripts dealing this topic shows a strong relation between IR/Hyperins and increased cardiovascular, cancer specific and all-cause mortality. Therefore, it is mandatory that scientific societies and health authorities of different nations let's face this serious problem.
