Abstract

The clinical effect and the mechanism of action of norethisterone acetate on the water-electrolyte metabolism were studied in 62 women with uterine myoma. The obtained data were compared with those of 25 healthy women. Tablets of norethisterone acetate were given during 3-4 months in doses of 2.5-5.0 mg/day from the 16th to the 25th day of the menstrual cycle. It was established that norethisterone acetate normalized the rhythm and characteristics of menstruation (in 41 patients duration of menstruation decreased by 4-5 days and blood loss lowered markedly). After 6 and 12 months tumour sizes reduced in 17 women and did not change in 44. Patients with uterine myoma differed from healthy women in rhythm of diuresis and amount of potassium excreted in the urine. The treatment with norethisterone acetate led to normalization of the electrolyte balance restoration of the diuresis rhythm and an increase of water excretion with the urine. The prescription of norethisterone acetate for women with uterine myoma is recommended as a prophylactic and therapeutic remedy. (Summary in ENG)
