The safety and efficacy of intraoperative autologous blood transfusion in abdominal simple total hysterectomy for endometriosis were examined. Four patients were treated using intraoperative salvage apparatus, Cell Saver, Haemo Lite 2. Blood gases, and electrolyte levels of the processed blood were also determined. Vaginal discharge and the processed blood were cultured to detect bacterial contamination. The mean age of the patients was 41.0 ±7.0 years, the blood loss was 692±342 ml, the volume of processed and reinfused blood was 278 ± 148 ml, and homologous transfusion was not required. A positive correlation was observed between the volume of blood loss and the hemoglobin (g) of the processed blood. All samples of vaginal discharge and two samples of processed blood without antibiotics were positive for bacteria ( 100%), while one of the two samples of processed blood with antibiotics added was negative (50%). There were no adverse reactions caused by the reinfusion of processed blood, such as infection, allergic reactions, a bleeding tendency, or embolism. Intraoperative autologous blood transfusion may be potentially useful in abdominal simple total hysterectomy for endometriosis.
