Abstract

Despite the robust technology of positive reinforcement, coercive treatments continue to be used in the practice of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). In this paper, we define coercion and provide examples of its use in ABA practice. Then, we describe strategies, using a behavioral systems approach, to reduce coercive practices in the workplace. We conclude by challenging the reader to approach ABA practice in a manner that is free from coercion and fully adopts strategies rooted in positive reinforcement.
