Abstract

Objective To evaluate the efficacy and safety of levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system(LNG-IUS)for the treatment of dysmenorrheal associated with adenomyosis. Methods 56 cases with moderate or severe dysmenorrheal associated with adenomyosis were treated by LNG-IUS at days 3 to 5 days after menstruation and followed up more than 12 months.Their dysmenorrheal and dyspareunia were scored by the visual analogue scale(VAS)and verbal rating scale(VRS)at baseline and 12 months follow-up.Results Compared with the baseline,VAS and VRS scores of the dysmenorrheal and dyspareunia were decreased significantly after 3 months,6 months,9 months and 12 months of application of LNG-IUS,associated with elevated levels of hematoglobin(P0.01).There was no significant difference in the menstrual cycle and the uterus size(P0.05).Conclusions Insertion of LNG-IUS could remarkably alleviates moderate or severe dysmenorrheal associated with adenomyosis.
