Here we introduce a phase-matching-directed nonlinear synthesis scheme that transforms the four-wave mixing detection process into a programmable waveform generator. Using intense terahertz pulses to excite broadband phonon polaritons in α-quartz, the phase-matching condition actively selects two specific polariton frequencies. Their coherent interference, mediated by third-order nonlinearity, produces an optical beat note at their difference frequency—a virtual frequency that is not constrained by material eigenmodes but is dictated by externally imposed parameters. This allows us to synthesize beat frequencies of 4.3/6.0 THz (extraordinary branch) and 6.3/7.1 THz (ordinary branch) in the optical signal. Furthermore, we introduce a double-terahertz-pulse excitation scheme that decomposes the broadband pump into two narrowband pulses aligned with the selected polariton modes. By independently tuning their carrier-envelope phases and field strengths, we achieve decoupled control over the temporal waveform and modulation depth of the synthesized beat note while keeping the beat frequency constant. This work establishes a universal framework for all-optical engineering of coherent terahertz waveforms, applicable to a wide range of dielectrics and scalable to other frequency domains. It paves the way for programmable terahertz photonic devices and coherent control of quantum systems.
