This paper describes a 22-year-old woman with repetitive hemoptysis whose attacks were clinically linked to her menstrual cycle, suggesting catamenial hemoptysis. CT imaging showed a localized opacity in the right middle lobe during episodes, and she underwent right middle lobectomy via video-assisted thoracic surgery, after which the hemoptysis subsided. The authors also briefly review 73 previously reported similar cases of catamenial hemoptysis since 1956. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it is a case of catamenial hemoptysis due to pulmonary endometriosis treated with VATS lobectomy.

Abstract

A 22-year-old woman presenting with repetitive hemoptysis was clinically diagnosed based on the fact that her symptoms corresponded with her menstruation cycle. Computed tomography revealed a specifically localized opacity in the right middle lobe of the lung at the time of each episode of hemoptysis. Following a right middle lobectomy, which was performed under video thoracoscopy, the symptoms subsided. We also briefly herein review the 73 similar cases with catamenial hemoptysis that have been reported since 1956.
