Low Grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasms: A Tertiary Care Centre Experience

article OA: green CC0

Abstract

The pathology and behaviour of appendiceal mucinous lesions is highly variable and can result in various presentations ranging from non-neoplastic to neoplastic. Low grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) accounts for 1% of gastrointestinal neoplasm, mostly seen in 5th to 6th decade with female preponderance. Out of total 996appendectomy cases in the current retrospective study, 538 were females and 458 were males, majority (86.6%) of the patients presented with symptoms of acute appendicitis which was confirmed on histopathology. Ten (1%) of the total cases were diagnosed histopathologically as LAMN, out of which 6 had suspicion of mucocele on imaging. Among these, 2 interesting cases of LAMN with coexistent endometriosis and Non- Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL) infiltration were also reported. LAMN is a rare group of mucinous lesions usually discovered incidentally during radiologic or endoscopic evaluation for unrelated complaints. In this study, we aimed at better understanding of this rare entity with respect to its characteristic morphological features and correlation with the clinico-radiological findings, and also described, two rare co-existent appendiceal pathologies (endometriosis and NHL).
