Extension of Existence Through Rajutkejut's Participation in World Yarn Bombing Day in the Pandemic Era

In 2020, the world was experiencing the Covid-19 pandemic, forcing people not to carry out their usual activities and have to adapt to new habits to survive. World Yarn Bombing Day is celebrated every year on June 11th by yarn bombers around the world. In Indonesia, there are growing numbers of yarn bombers. They called themselves the RajutKejut crochet community. In 2020 for the first time, they took part in the celebration. RajutKejut, which usually responds to a public space in-group, should be conducting the yarn bombing activities individually because of the pandemic situation. The easy-to-use technology such as social media had made the celebration seamless by connecting to each member easily. The research question is how RajutKejut crocheters celebrated World Yarn Bombing Day during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study uses a qualitative method, examines the works of crocheters who are involved in this celebration, with a practice-led research approach by creating crochet work and reflecting on the artistic experience of researchers, and comparing with others’ crochet works and artistic experiences as well. At the end of the discussion, the study shows that the digital world has become a part of everyday life for crocheters. Social media plays an important role in the production process. The works on social media mean the extension of the crocheter's existence, besides discovering crochet ideas and how to make them, documenting the work, sharing photos of the crochet work and the stories within, and exchanging comments about the work across regions.
