However, mountains are under threat by inter alia climate and land use changes, and a target-oriented implementation of measures towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is urgent. Therefore, sustainable mountain development needs focus from decisionmakers and management, balancing interests of stakeholders across different regions and governance levels. Here, we identify SDG priority needs throughout different mountain regions of the world. While we found the Northern Andes most need to protect and restore biodiversity, the Central Andes need quality education. In the European Alps, sustainable consumption and production should be priority. For the Himalaya, combating climate change is most needed. Globally, life on land, quality education, and good health and well-being are the SDGs with the highest consensus priority. The results show how different priority perspectives can be consolidated, and where options for synergistic sustainable mountain development are. The results and figures presented are the outcome of a survey involving human subjects. There was no local research ethics committee that could have approved the proposed survey. Nevertheless, we worked hard to ensure that the rights of participants were respected during the survey participation and whole analysis process. The survey, which will be provided as part of the supplementary information, was accompanied by a short introductory text outlining the survey cause and pointing out that no data would be collected that could be linked to an individual participant. On a voluntary basis we onlay offered the submission of email addresses to receive the published survey results. The participation in the survey was accepted as consent.
