Abstract

To determine if there is a correlation between the presence of significant endometriosis at laparoscopy, and an anteverted, retroflexed uterus on transvaginal ultrasound imaging All patients operated on by the Endoscopy Team at King Edward Memorial Hospital, Perth, Western Australia, during the 2017 calendar year were identified. Each patient's case notes were reviewed by two independent investigators. The first reviewer documented the surgical findings, as well as preoperative symptoms and prior endometriosis treatment. The second investigator then documented the ultrasound findings, as well as other relevant medical history, including previous mode of delivery. Data was then analysed to determine if there is a correlation between uterine lie and a degree of endometriosis. Preliminary results suggest a link between an anteverted, retroflexed uterus on transvaginal ultrasound examination and the presence of endometriosis at laparoscopy. Presence of an anteverted, retroflexed uterus on transvaginal ultrasound examination is suggestive of endometriosis, and should prompt a more detailed examination for confirmatory evidence of endometriosis.
