This study investigated whether immunological markers are associated with successful pregnancy after in vitro fertilization, enrolling 131 women and comparing immunophenotyping markers (CD3, CD4, CD8, CD19, CD16/56) and cytokines measured in serum and in follicular aspiration fluid collected during oocyte retrieval. The authors found no significant differences in the lymphocyte subset markers by pregnancy outcome, but IL-1β and IFN-γ differed in serum between women with and without pregnancy, and IL-1β also differed in follicular aspiration fluid. The study’s caveat is that its cross-sectional association design does not establish causality for these cytokines as predictors of outcome.
