Abstract

Motivation science remains fragmented for half a century, with leading frameworks—Self-Determination Theory, Expectancy–Value Theory, Achievement Goal Theory, and Self-Efficacy Theory—advancing in parallel yet failing to fully explain why motivation sometimes collapses despite strong goals or rewards. I introduce the Ontoceptive Loop, a unifying framework integrating Projection (goal-directed anticipation), Registration (internalization), and Valence (affective tone). Motivation depends on the integrity of all three; deficits in any one produce predictable failure modes. Mapping constructs from major theories into this three-dimensional space reveals convergences, clarifies differences, and exposes overlooked gaps. The framework generates falsifiable predictions and offers a diagnostic language for designing multi-component interventions. Its applications span psychology, education, organisational management, health behaviour, and public policy—providing a foundation for strategies that achieve lasting engagement and performance. By reframing motivation as a dynamic loop rather than a single driver, the Ontoceptive approach advances both theoretical integration and cross-sector impact.
