Genetically determined thyroid disease and risk of preeclampsia : a Mendelian Randomization study

Abstract
Background: Observational studies suggest a possible correlation between thyroid disease and preeclampsia. However, the causal relationship between them is unclear. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this research was to examine at the potential links between thyroid illness and preeclampsia. METHODS A two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) research was conducted using data from a genome-wide association analysis to investigate the probable causal influence of thyroid disease and preeclampsia. In this study, the inverse variance weighted (IVW) method was used as the primary result. RESULTS The results of the study showed that hypothyroidism (OR=3.804, 95% CI: 1.121-12.911; p=0.0321), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) (OR=1.128, 95% CI: 1.009-1.260; p=0.0340) were positively associated with preeclampsia. No significant association was found between genetic predisposition to hyperthyroidism and preeclampsia. CONCLUSION This MR study found a positive association between genetically predicted hypothyroidism, TSH and preeclampsia.
