Abstract

Women with ulcerative colitis already face the prospect of reduced fertility when they receive medical treatment for their condition. The outlook is even bleaker for those who undergo pouch surgery. A new study now shows that the surgical standard—colectomy with ileal pouch anal anastomosis (IPAA)—renders almost half of women with ulcerative colitis infertile.
