Abstract

Endometriosis is a disease characterized by the presence of tissue resembling endometrium (the lining of the uterus) outside the uterus (1). The tissue acts like regular uterine tissue does during the period. But this blood has nowhere to go. It causes a chronic inflammatory reaction that may result in irritation, severe pain, scarring, adhesions and fibrosis within the pelvis and other parts of the body. It is a benign, oestrogen dependent condition.
