Age-related cerebello-thalamo-cortical white matter degradation and executive function performance across the lifespan
This study examined how age-related degradation of cerebello-thalamo-cortical (CTC) white matter relates to executive function (EF) performance across the lifespan in 190 healthy adults aged 20–94, using diffusion tensor imaging with deterministic tractography and multiple working memory/EF tests. The authors found that reduced CTC white matter integrity, operationalized as higher mean, radial, and axial diffusivities in fronto-cerebellar tracts, was associated with significantly poorer EF performance, with effects emerging in an age-dependent manner (stronger in older than younger adults). A stated limitation is that the study is correlational, using imaging metrics and cognitive testing in healthy participants rather than establishing causality.
