Topographical and Morphological Feature studies of Valles Marineris, Mars by Mars Color Camera onboard Mars Orbiter Mission with MOLA data

Abstract

In the present study, the Valles Marineris Province of Mars, have been selected for morphological analysis by using the Mars Colour Camera (MCC) on board Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), commonly called as Mangalyaan. Mars Colour Camera (MCC) images the complete Mars with a spatial resolution of nearly 4 km to 19 m. Features like, fractured terrains, plateau, landslides, yardangs, impact craters were mapped using MCC. The topographic analysis were done using the MOLA data indicating that Noctis Labrynthus has the highest elevation of ~ 7500 m, Melas Chasma and Coprates Chasma has the lowest depth of about ~ -5000m. Fractured terrain shows the tectonic activity whereas, the presence of plateau, mesa and yardangs shows the abundance of aeolian activity, Chaotic terrain shows that they are plateau remnants and the presence of landslide and slide materials shows that the landslide had occurred due gravity or due to the underground water movement.
