Abstract

This project contains the protocol for a scoping review that maps the available scientific evidence on the relationship between the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) and endometriosis in women of reproductive age. Endometriosis is a chronic, estrogen-dependent inflammatory disease that affects approximately 190 million women worldwide. It is associated with chronic pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, and infertility, and it substantially affects quality of life. Diet is a potentially modifiable factor that may modulate systemic inflammation. However, the evidence on the inflammatory potential of the diet in endometriosis has not been systematically mapped, and the Central American population remains underrepresented in this research. The review will follow the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology for scoping reviews and will be reported according to the PRISMA-ScR extension. Searches will be conducted in MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane, with no restrictions on language, geography, or year of publication. Study selection will be performed independently and blinded in Rayyan, and data will be charted using an adapted JBI extraction instrument. Results will be synthesized with descriptive statistics, tables, graphs, and maps. This review is conducted by researchers from the Instituto Nacional de Salud (INS) and the Ministerio de Salud of El Salvador, with institutional funding.
