Incidence and Clinical Profiles of COVID-19 Pneumonia in Pregnant Women: A Single-Center Cohort Descriptive Study from Spain

Abstract

We report our experience with pregnant women with COVID-19 pneumonia diagnosed between March 5 to April 5, 2020 at a tertiary-care center at Madrid, Spain. COVID-19 pneumonia was reported in 32/52 women with symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection (61.5%); only six of them (18.7%) had some underlying disease, mostly asthma. Supplemental oxygen therapy (OT) was required in 18 patients (56.3%) and high-flow OT in six (18.75%). Eight patients (25%) fulfilled ARDS criteria and mechanical ventilation was required in two cases (6.2%). Tocilizumab was administered in five patients (15.6%). Delivery was precipitated due to infection in three patients (9.4%). Newborns had all a favorable outcome with no cases of neonatal SARS-CoV-2 transmission. More severe cases requiring supplemental OT had bilateral consolidative or interstitial infiltrates on chest X-ray (55.6% vs. 0, P-value: 0.003) and serum C-reactive protein (PCR) levels >10 mg/dl (33% vs. 0, P-value: 0.05) more frequently than patients not requiring OT.Pregnant women with COVID-19 have a high risk of develop pneumonia that is severe in more than half of the patients.
