Tesfamicael This is a preprint; it has not been peer reviewed by a journal. https://doi.org/ 10.21203/rs.3.rs-6928680/v1 This work is licensed under a CC BY 4.0 License Status: Posted Version 1 posted You are reading this latest preprint version Abstract This paper provides an analysis of Problem Posing (PP) activities in mathematics textbooks via the Anthropological Theory of Didactics (ATD). Mathematics textbooks from four different education systems: Ethiopia, South Sudan, Norway, and Sweden and tasks in four mathematical domains—Algebra (functions), Geometry, Measurement, and Statistics—were collected and analysed using qualitative content analysis with a two-dimensional praxeology. The findings show that PP activities are not significant in all the different systems (institutions). The domain of Algebra seems more favourable for PP activities. In addition, the praxeological analysis shows that embedding PP activities in textbooks is dominated by very few techniques and technologies. ATD provides not only excellent tools to compare the different practices across institutions but also tools to develop textbooks.
