The Role of the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) in the North Mid Endometriosis Centre (NMEC): A Retrospective Analysis of Surgical Cases Over Two Years

The North Mid Endometriosis Centre (NMEC) is a BSGE-accredited tertiary referral centre specialising in the management of complex deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE). This retrospective study examines 35 consecutive cases of recto-vaginal DIE managed surgically over a two-year period, highlighting the pivotal role of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) in surgical decision-making, operative planning, and outcome optimisation. All cases were reviewed in MDT meetings convened twice monthly, with preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) informing lesion mapping and surgical strategy. The majority of patients underwent bowel shaving (91.4%), with disc resection and segmental resection performed in select cases. Postoperative follow-up at six months demonstrated significant improvements in pain scores, bowel and bladder function, and quality of life. These findings underscore the value of the MDT model in enhancing surgical precision, minimising complications, and aligning management with patient goals in the context of complex endometriosis.
