Side-Channel Attacks in Android: A Review

Abstract

Smartphones have become indispensable in daily life, with Android being the most widely used operating system. Its popularity, however, makes it a prime target for malicious actors. One growing threat is side-channel attacks---stealthy techniques that exploit indirect signals such as power consumption, timing, or electromagnetic emissions, rather than software vulnerabilities. These attacks are difficult to detect, bypass conventional security measures, and pose serious risks to user privacy and data. This paper reviews the current landscape of side-channel attacks on Android by synthesizing findings from existing studies. It highlights common attack methods, targeted vulnerabilities, and proposed defenses. Additionally, the paper identifies research gaps and outlines directions for future work to enhance Android security. The aim is to deepen understanding of side-channel threats and support the development of more robust protective measures.
