Based on the panel data of 299 cities in China from 2008 to 2024, this paper constructs a regression model to explore the impact of new energy vehicle market size on the level of urban green development and its mechanism. It is found that the expansion of the market scale of new energy vehicles can significantly promote the level of urban green development, and in this process, urban population density has a significant positive moderating effect. In terms of the mechanism of action, the expansion of the market size of new energy vehicles has improved the level of green development of cities by promoting the upgrading of new energy technology, changing the energy structure of cities and optimizing the structure of upstream and downstream industries. Accordingly, this paper puts forward policy suggestions about urban green development from the perspective of new energy vehicle market scale expansion.
