Focusing on critical materials and products as defined by the US Department of Trade, it examines how trade flows can effect patenting activities. The study explores the impact of export and import shares on innovation, measured by patent claims and assignees. Findings reveal that higher export shares boost innovation, while import shares correlate with diverse innovative activities. The article highlights the intertwined nature of trade and innovation in critical supply chains, underscoring its significance for economic and policy analysis.
