This study investigated the expression of the neuronal cell adhesion molecule L1 in endometrial and endometriotic tissues to explore its role in disease progression. Researchers analyzed samples from 79 patients with endometriosis and 37 controls using immunohistochemistry, quantitative real-time PCR, and ELISA on peritoneal fluid. The results showed significantly higher L1 expression in the epithelial cells of both endometrium and endometriosis lesions compared to controls, while stromal expression was lower in endometriosis cases. Although soluble L1 levels in peritoneal fluid did not differ between groups, the authors suggest that L1 may contribute to lesion development and pain through neurite outgrowth mechanisms.
