To investigate it, a five-axis machining center being taken as an example, the mathematical model on the relationship between the six geometric errors of rotary axis and the deviation of the ball center of the magnetic ball socket through homogeneous transformation matrix was established. The effect of the distribution of the ball center positions of the ball socket on A-axis, and the sensitivity of measuring errors of the ball center positions with the ball bar on the identification accuracy of the six geometric errors, are systematically investigated during the process of the error identification for the rotary axes. Then, the optimal distribution scheme of the ball center position is got to improve the identification accuracy of the geometric errors of the rotary axis. It provides an important theoretical basis for properly installing the ball center of the magnetic ball socket during measuring the geometric errors of the rotary axis of CNC machine tool.
