Level of cognitive distortions among teachers in Kuwait and its influence on cerebral dominance

Abstract Background This research aimed to identify level of cognitive distortions among teachers in Kuwait and its influence on cerebral dominance. An Internet-based cross-sectional study was conducted where the participants from the teachers in some schools in Kuwait were targeted using total population sampling. 380 participants from Kuwaiti society were recruited, between September4 and October28, 2022. Participants completed two self-reported scales. The scales included the Torrance cerebral dominance scale (TCDS) and the cognitive distortions questionnaire (CD-Quest). Results The results reveal that there is low level of cognitive distortions among teachers. About 13% of the teachers have high level of cognitive distortions. There are differences between teachers who have left-brain dominance, teachers who have right- brain dominance and teachers who have whole- brain dominance in total score of the cognitive distortions questionnaire (CD-Quest) and most of its dimensions in favor of teachers who have whole- brain dominance. There was a positive correlation between age and the total score of CD-Quest and most of its dimensions. The groups most suffering from cognitive distortions among teachers were: high -income peoples, females, singles, patients with chronic diseases. Conclusions This study recommended that cognitive therapy should be used for removing cognitive distortions among teachers. Providing cognitive therapy to the groups most vulnerable to cognitive distortions. The anatomical nature of the brain must be considered when treating cognitive distortions.
