Abstract
Purpose: To analyze the MRI findings of isolated specimen of uterine adenomysis and its histopathologic basis. To investigate the MRI diagnosis of uterine adenomyosis.Materials and Methods:17 isolated specimens of uterine adenomyosis were scanned by 0.23T MR made in PHILIPS.The sequences included saggital T1WI,T2WI and inversion recovery T2WI(irT2WI).Results: The volume of uterines increased and shapes were lobular. The conjugation zones became thicker. The range was from 10.4mm to 28.6mm and means 15.2mm.The foci located in the posterior wall of uterines in 14 specimens and 3 in the anterior walls.Diffuse hyperintensive foci distributed over the areas of decreased signal intensity in myometrium of all the specimens on T2WI and irT2WI.Many hyporintensive foci were found in all specimens on T1WI and slightly hyperintense foci in 6 specimens on T1WI.The hyperintense foci shown on T2WI or irT2WI and hypointense foci on T1WI corresponded to the heterotopic endometrial islands without hemorrhage. The hypointense foci shown on both T2WI and T1WI were the heterotopic endometrial islands with hemorrhage. Conclusions: Low field MRI is very useful techniques for the diagnosis of adenomyosis and reflect the histopathologic features.T2WI and irT2WI are much sensitive sequences.
