Transcatheter uterine artery embolization in the treatment of gynecological and obstetrical diseases

Objective To assess the value of transcatheter uterine artery embolization(TAUE) in the treatment of gynecological and obstetrical diseases.Methods A total of 154 patients with gynecological and obstetrical diseases aging from 18 to 57 years old were enrolled in this study,including 78 cases of hysteromyoma,11 uterine adenomyosis,1 case of aplastic anemia,6 cases of extra-uterine pregnancy,8 cases of post-uterine curettage hemorrhage,41 cases of postnatal hemorrhoea,2 cases of acephalocystis racemosa and 7 cases of malignant tumors.TAUE was performed with Seldinger technique,and the gelfoam particles and/or polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) were used as the embolic agents.Results TAUE was performed successfully in all 154 patients.The average volume of uterus diminished by 40% and hysteromyoma by 59% one year after TAUE in patients with hysteromyoma and uterine adenomyosis,respectively.Bleeding was stopped instantly in patients with haemorrhage.No severe complication occurred in this group.Conclusion TAUE can be used as an important method for the treatment of gynecological and obstetrical diseases.
