Perception of speech rate and intensity in Parkinson's disease
This study examined how Parkinson’s disease (PD) affects auditory perception of speech acoustic properties, focusing on discrimination and learning of speech rate and intensity, and how these relate to disease severity. People with PD were compared with age- and hearing-matched controls using perceptual tasks that included speech, non-speech, and visual stimuli; rate discrimination was tested for stimulus specificity, and severity was measured with the MDS-UPDRS. People with PD showed significantly worse rate discrimination across all stimulus types, whereas intensity discrimination did not differ between groups overall but was poorer in participants with greater PD severity; learning tasks for rate and intensity did not differ by group and were unrelated to disease severity.
