Abstract
Danio rerio, the zebrafish, is a small, freshwater fish that has become a powerful and widely-used vertebrate model organism in modern biological and biomedical research. Its unique combination of a transparent embryo, rapid external development, and ease of genetic manipulation has provided an unparalleled platform for studying a wide range of biological processes, from embryogenesis and organ development to neurobiology, disease modeling, and drug discovery. The completion of its genome sequence and the availability of powerful genetic tools, such as CRISPR-Cas9, have cemented its status as a premier model for understanding vertebrate biology. This comprehensive review explores the key features that make the zebrafish an ideal model, its profound contributions to our understanding of development, regeneration, and disease, and its growing role in translational research, highlighting its unique advantages and future potential.
