Signature of the Saturated Hanle Effect in the Linearly Polarized Coronal Fe XIV Emission Line

Abstract

Abstract Direct measurements of magnetic fields in the solar corona is an open challenge in solar physics. Information about their topology can be derived from polarized observations of forbidden coronal emission lines through the saturated Hanle effect. In this work we present the first results from observations of the Fe XIV 530.3 nm emission line acquired during the total solar eclipse of April 8, 2024. We analyzed polarized images acquired by the Coronal Magnetograph (CorMag) that observed the solar corona from 1.05 up to 2 solar radii. Maps of the linear polarization angle were derived, and interpreted as an important signature of the saturated Hanle effect of forbidden lines, establishing a correlation with the direction of the local magnetic field. Comparisons with a Potential-Field Source-Surface model showed consistency between observed polarization patterns and the topology of modeled magnetic structures, particularly in the regions under study. These results confirmed the diagnostic potential of the saturated Hanle effect in forbidden coronal lines and validated the Coronal Magnetograph as an effective instrument for constraining coronal magnetic field models.
