Limited concise research has been conducted evaluating reasons for this limitation. In this exploratory study, a spoken assessment simulation was conducted to compare the performance of candidates reaching Band 6.0 to those limited to Band 5.5. The results revealed that Band 5.5 participants produced far lengthier, more repetitive and grammatically inaccurate utterances with more frequent use of disfluency markers. In contrast, Band 6.0 participants exhibited greater expressiveness but had less vocal control. Contextualization within responses and rates of lexical and grammatical complexity saw similar utilization. The findings were discussed and correlated with existing research in the field.
